Socialism is the fantastic younger brother of the almost obsolete despotism it wants to inherit; its aspirations are therefore reactionary in the deepest sense.
For he desires an abundance of state power such as only despotism has ever had; indeed, he surpasses all the past by striving for the formal annihilation of the individual, which seems to him an unjustified luxury of nature and is to be transformed by him into an expedient organ of the commonwealth.
Because of his kinship, he always appears close to all excessive displays of power, like the old typical socialist Plato at the court of the Sicilian tyrant; he desires (and possibly promotes) the Caesarian state of violence of this century because, as I said, he wants to become its heir.
But even this inheritance would not suffice for his purposes; he needs the most abject prostration of all citizens before the unconditional state, as nothing like it has ever existed; and since he can no longer even count on the old religious reverence for the state, but must involuntarily and continually work to eliminate it - namely, because he is working to eliminate all existing states - he can only hope for existence for a short time, through extreme terrorism, here and there.
That is why he quietly prepares for reigns of terror and drives the word “justice” like a nail into the heads of the half-educated masses, in order to rob them completely of their intellect (after this intellect has already suffered greatly through half-education) and to create a good conscience for the evil game they are supposed to play.

Socialism can serve to teach brutally and forcefully the danger of any accumulation of state power and thus instill distrust in the state itself.
When its harsh voice breaks out into the field cry of “as much state as possible”, it initially becomes louder than ever: but soon the counter-cry resounds with all the greater force: “as little state as possible”.
